United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
Approximately 45 Delegations - Double Delegate
Topic A: The Role of UNESCO in Promoting Global AI Safety Standards for Cultural Preservation
Topic B: Addressing the AI Skills Gap in Developing Nations
Welcome to the UNESCO Committee for ILMUNC XLI! In this committee, delegates will tackle two key issues at the intersection of technology, ethics, and human rights: The Role of UNESCO in Promoting Global AI Safety Standards for Cultural Preservation and Addressing the AI Skills Gap in Developing Nations. Delegates will explore the ethical challenges of AI’s legal rights, autonomy, and impact on global governance, security, and human freedom. Through debate and innovative policy proposals, delegates will work towards solutions that balance technological advancement with ethical responsibility, aiming for a future where AI and humanity coexist.
Dear Delegates,
Welcome to ILMUNC XLI! My name is Amish Sethi, and I am excited to be your chair for UNESCO.
A little bit about me! I am a second-year student enrolled in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, majoring in computer science. I am also a member of Penn’s South Asian Society and compete for our Aerial Robotics and Data Science clubs. Participating in Penn's competitive Model United Nations Team INTERCOL brings me immense satisfaction. I have also previously taken on the role of chairperson for UPMUNC, a conference organized by Penn for other college students. When I'm not involved in MUN activities, I take pleasure in watching reruns of my favorite shows How I Met Your Mother and Brooklyn 99, playing basketball, and going on walks around Philly. We are excited to meet you all and can't wait to welcome you to Philly. If you have any questions about the committee, please email me or Sam!

Dear Delegates,
I’m Sam Jung, and I’m excited to be the co-chair of the UNESCO committee for ILMUNC XLI! Amish and I have been helping plan this committee over the last few months, and we look forward to sharing a fun and engaging committee experience with you.
A bit about me: I grew up, and lived in Georgia my whole life before attending Penn. I’m currently a third-year student pursuing my bachelor's in political science with a concentration in tech policy, and co-currently pursuing my master’s degree in computer science as well. At Penn, I’m involved with the SFORZA music group, and conduct research on the TikTok algorithm.
Outside of Penn, I work on tech policy at the state, federal, and international level. I’ve advised the United Nations and White House on internet + AI governance issues, and am currently working to get more college students involved with their local government. I also work with the U.S. AI Safety Institute to write policy for Large Language Models, and tech companies to create deployment recommendations for some of the largest foundational models currently available.
In my free time, you can find me hosting dinners with friends, backpacking around the Appalachian trail, and listening to (really bad) country music. I actively binge YouTube shorts, and am still trying to find the magic house mix that’ll let me quit college and debut as a DJ.
Amish and I are aware that committee may be fast-paced and a little overwhelming, particularly in a setting like our specialized agency. Our goal is to create a fun, productive, and stress-free committee, with new friendships hopefully formed by the end of the weekend. To that end, here’s our commitment to you: we will try our best to create a conference atmosphere that supports meaningful dialogue and cooperation. We are also open to taking suggestions throughout committee as well.
If you have any questions before the conference, please email me (samjung@sas.upenn.edu) AND cc Amish Sethi (asethi04@seas.upenn.edu).
We can’t wait to meet you, and welcome you Philly!
