These crucial topics will enable delegates to explore the underlying obstacles that obstruct the full engagement of women in the global economy and the significance of including gender diversity in peacekeeping and conflict resolution. Delegates will represent diverse viewpoints from member nations and introduce innovative policies to improve women's access to resources, education, and opportunities in developing nations. Dear Delegates,

I am excited to welcome you to the Specialized/ECOSOC committee of ILMUNC! The committee subject is the Commission on the Status of Women. My name is Nia Matthews, and as the moderator, it is with great pleasure that I will be guiding you through dynamic and meaningful discussions revolving around advancing gender equality and empowering women.

Established in 1945, the Economic and Social Council stands as one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. Its primary role involves coordinating the economic and social efforts of the UN and its specialized agencies. ECOSOC recommends and facilitates discussions on various issues including sustainable development, industrialization, technology, international trade, and social welfare.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) plays a pivotal role in advocating for women’s rights and advancing gender equality worldwide. We will convene to assess advancements in gender equality, pinpoint obstacles, establish global standards, and devise tangible policies to foster gender equality and the empowerment of women, and I look forward to engaging in these conversations with you all.

I am a sophomore in the Wharton School of Business, concentrating in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and pursuing a minor in Consumer Psychology. I’m from a small, rural, town called Mardela Springs in Maryland. This will be my first ever Model UN conference and I am beyond excited to join the ILMUNC team and participate in the opportunity to create an enriching and valuable experience for you all! Outside of ILMUNC, I am a representative and the Secretary for Penn’s Undergraduate Assembly, a Black Ivy League Business Conference Logistics Co-Chair, and I serve on the Residential Services Advisory Board where I advocate for student’s housing concerns. In my free time, I enjoy surrounding myself with great people and good vibes.

Mikal, Jourdan, and I are super excited to be working with you in the ECOSOC committee. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the committee.
