Ad Hoc
Approximately 20 Delegates - Single Delegate
Welcome to the Ad Hoc Committee for ILMUNC XLI! The epitome of a crisis committee—only time will tell what adventures delegates will face in January.
Dear Delegates,
Welcome to ILMUNC XLI’s iteration of Ad Hoc. My name is Alicia Xiong, and I will be one of your chairs throughout this committee. Over the course of these six sessions, I hope to guide you through meaningful and insightful debates.
A little bit about myself: I am currently a senior at Penn studying in the Huntsman Program with concentrations in Finance and Business Economics and Public Policy and a target in Russian. I am originally from New Hope, Pennsylvania, but I went to school in Connecticut. At Penn, I am the president of the International Affairs Association and a member of Penn’s competitive Model UN team. I have also staffed ILMUNC before. Alex (our wonderful Crisis Director) and I ran Hype House two years ago! Outside of my Model UN commitments, I love running and have done four marathons in the past two years.
For those of you who have never participated in an Ad Hoc committee before, it is slightly different from your typical crisis committee. While we will have the typical in-room, out-room set-up, you will have far less preparation time as the topic and background guide will only be released days before the start of the conference. However, we won’t leave you completely in the dark. Leading up to ILMUNC, Alex, Nico, and I will be releasing small hints that you can puzzle together to figure out the committee topic. Ultimately, we hope to see you think on your feet and be flexible!
Alex, Nico, and I look forward to meeting all of you in person. If you have any questions (other than what the committee topic is), please feel free to email any of us!

Dear Delegates,
My name is Alex Zhou and I am super excited to be your Crisis Director for this weekend! Ad Hoc is the type of committee that I had always wanted to do in high school — I promise to make this committee just as dynamic and vibrant as reality. Alicia and I have had a great time planning this committee out for you and we really like to think that it’ll be one of the best Model UN experiences you’ll have in your time as a delegate. Before we get into the background guide, I’d love to tell you a little bit more about myself.
I’m currently a senior in the Huntsman Program, studying Finance in the Wharton School and International Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences with a minor in Creative Writing. I am from the Chicago suburbs (if you know Stevenson, go Patriots!) but recently moved downtown and have a fond appreciation for everything Chicago has to offer. On campus, I am involved in Kite and Key (tour guiding), Wharton Ambassadors, the Admissions Dean’s Advisory Board, and the Huntsman Student Advisory Board. Off campus, I love reading & writing in my free time, exploring restaurants in the Philly area, making intricate Spotify playlists, and generally being really cool and normal and chill.
I remember my four years of high school Model UN incredibly warmly, and I’ve competed enough in crisis on different competitive levels to know what exactly contributes to solid crisis committees. My hope is that you come out of this committee more willing to think on your feet, outside the box, and hopefully make a few new friends along the way. Philly is also a beautiful and kind city and I hope that your time in the center of the city (literally Center City) enhances your Model UN experience this weekend.
The secretariat is incredible and has worked countless hours to ensure that ILMUNC XXXIX is a Model UN experience unlike any other. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out to Alicia or I anytime.
Best,
Alex Zhou (he/him)

Dear Delegates,
Welcome to Ad Hoc at ILMUNC XLI! My name is Nicolas Wellington, and I will be one of your committee chairs. Throughout this conference, Alex, Alicia and I will attempt to create the best environment for your contributions.
A little about myself: I am currently a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Psychology. I am originally from Washington, D.C., where I attended The French International School. At Penn, I am a member of the Intercollegiate Model UN Team, EuroPenn, and Penn Club Tennis. Aside from clubs, I spend my time reading, collecting coins, watching soccer, and playing poker.
If you’ve already been in an Ad Hoc committee then you know to expect a fun, engaging dynamic. If this is your first time, here are a few things to know. You don’t have to worry about your topic or background guide until we get much closer to the start of the conference and just like crisis, the debate flow is rather high pace.
My fellow chairs and I are excited to see you all play with the topic we have chosen. Email myself or another chair if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely,
Nicolas Pierre Wellington
