Welcome to the General Assembly
Dear Delegates,
It is my great honor to welcome you to ILMUNC XXIX! Being a true Model UN aficionado, I could not be more eager for the twenty-ninth session of the most incredible conference in the world. I started doing Model UN in my freshman year of high school, and I could not help getting more and more enthusiastic about it ever since. I served as an Assistant-Secretary-General for last year’s ILMUNC, and it was my great pleasure to be involved with such impressive, high-quality debate and fantastic delegates from all over the world. This year, I will be serving as one of your Under-Secretary-Generals for General Assemblies, and I am already very excited to see you all do an amazing job in your committees and have a lot of fun!
As for myself, I am a freshman studying Systems Engineering and Economics. I am very interested in international development, and I hope to work on the socio-economic prospects of emerging countries in the future. Being originally from Brasilia, Brazil, I am a big lover of dance, warm weather and (loud) music. I am also a huge fan of languages; I have studied Spanish, French, German and Portuguese for years, so if you speak any of these, or want to teach me some of another language you may speak, definitely come have an alternative talk with me sometime during the conference. At Penn, besides serving as your USG, I am also in Ya’lla (Penn’s belly dancing troupe) and Penn Eco-Reps.
Being part of the ILMUNC Secretariat has given me an unparalleled opportunity to work with extremely competent and fun people. Our whole staff endeavors to make ILMUNC XXIX the best conference we have ever had. I am sure that the creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm of our secretariat, chairs, moderators and staffers will allow you all to enjoy an unforgettable weekend full of high-level debate and really fun experiences.
Throughout the conference I will be visiting your committees a lot to keep you updated with announcements, deliver gorgeous rose and teddygrams, and watch some of your engaging debate. Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions, or if you just want to introduce yourself. The same applies during conference; I will be working close to you guys all the time, so please come talk to me if you need anything at all, or just want to say hi. I am looking forward to meeting you all in January!
Best,
Renata Giarola

Dear Delegates,
I am incredibly excited to welcome you to the twenty-ninth session of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference. As one of your Under-Secretary-Generals for the General Assemblies, I can’t wait to be a part of this amazing weekend with you! The secretariat, composed of talented and dedicated individuals, has spent countless hours to make sure the committees are extremely stimulating and enjoyable. Last year, I had my first Model UN experience as an Assistant-Secretary-General for ILMUNC XXVIII and immediately fell in love with the debate and exhilaration of conference. I am so excited to come back and make this the best ILMUNC ever!
Throughout the weekend, I really hope I get a chance to meet you in person and introduce myself. I live in Rye, NY and am a freshman in the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business. I was raised in Germany and Spain before moving to New York for middle school, and so I have always been extremely fascinated by languages and interactions between cultures. I speak Spanish, German, French, and am currently on my way to learning Portuguese as well. Outside of Model UN, I am a member of the Huntsman Student Advisory Board and the Chi Omega sorority. I also absolutely love to practice yoga and play basketball.
This year you have such a capable and dedicated dais, staff, and secretariat working to make this conference thought-provoking and enjoyable. To achieve this, we picked the committees and their topics because we are sure that they will lead you to invigorating and rewarding debate. I am excited to observe the interactions between you and your peers, as it is the delegates who hold the power to shape this weekend into the best conference to date.
I know that your active engagement combined with the secretariat’s work will make this conference nothing short of amazing. Throughout the weekend, I will be coming into committee to observe debate, make announcements, and, of course, deliver surprises. Although I wholeheartedly welcome you to come up to me during the weekend, please don’t hesitate to email me beforehand as well. The entire secretariat and staff are tremendously ecstatic to have you join us in Philadelphia this January!
Warm Regards,
Paula Berenguer

The General Assembly—the principal organ mentioned in the United Nations Charter—is the main deliberative body of the United Nations. As the primary forums for international debate and cooperation, the General Assemblies offer the same right of representation to all 192 UN member states. The General Assemblies have become many countries’ principal diplomatic connection with the entire global community. Every member of the assemblies has the opportunity to voice his or her concerns and actively participate in the global decision-making process. The General Assemblies engage in studies on international issues, recommend action from member states and UN bodies, and develop international law. The General Assembly committees will be the largest at ILMUNC XXIX and will give delegates the ability to debate traditional global issues in a larger forum. This year, delegates will discuss a number of relevant topics that span the entire spectrum of international relations. Alongside four of our hallmark committees, for the first time in several years we will have the Second Committee: Economic and Financial, which is both interesting and relevant given the current state of global financial affairs. Finally, we are excited to once again offer our signature all-novice committee, designed specifically for first-time delegates. This year, the novice committee will be the United Nations Development Programme.
